It's really cool that people are starting to get/get into what we're doing over here, but please: don't kid yourself. I, DJ Ruxbin, do not spin records and throw parties as a self-promotional tool because I think as a DJ I am some great talent that deserves slots on huge shows, maximum stage time and the focus on me being gawd's gift to DJing. I'll be the first to admit I ain't nothing special. I do this because I really do love this music. I honestly straight up just love my records. Love playing them loud, in every genre, for all people. And I love the thought that by doing it my way, no rules, no restrictions, that I am facilitating experiences for some of you that can touch you the way I was, all those fucking years ago, when Punk Rock, Metal and Heavy Electronic Music [then called 'industrial'] saved my life and gave me both purpose AND a sense of community.

You can come at me on a lot of things [bro], but you cant fucking tell me I dont believe in what I want. Because I do. And I keep myself reminded, every goddamned day, through the words of the musicians and lyricists that came before me, that wrote it down, edited it, crafted it into music that reached me and then came and sang it to me when I needed it the most. I am not a Disc Jockey because I am ANYTHING special. I am a DJ because I own the best fucking records that anybody ever bothered to put out. And this next year, 2012, you're gonna see a lot less 'DJ Ruxbin' and a LOT more ACTUAL RECORDS.

It's 32 degrees out right now, December is in exactly two weeks, Winter time is practically here.

Every year around this time I play a couple songs to get me in the mood for the months ahead. Songs like Wu-Tang's "Winter Warz", Atmosphere's "Tears for Sheep", and always "The Winter" by Apathy.

This year I found a great remix of the original with samples from the Nine Inch Nails song "Into The Void"

On the Record 2: Speaker for the Dead

Philadelphia is known for its vast legion of electronic music DJ's and Producers. Having started my (Dr. Ew) musical journey in an original band, I've always had a soft spot for DJ's who spin their own compositions and an even softer spot for producers who do live sets of their material. Enter Philadelphia's own Speaker for the Dead. This guy is more than a producer, I would call this cat a real composer. He comes out with some of the most epic, unique and jaw dropping tunes all while maintaining an amazing sense of arrangement and music theory that is on some def next level old jazz guy shit. Speaker for the Dead has been a good friend of mine for a few years now and has just dropped his first official solo release "ILLUSIONAIRE" available on iTunes and all other major digital music sites. If you know me you know I'm a loud mouth so I thought I would force some words out of my more reserved pal Speaker here in the form of an interview so ya'll can get to know one of Philly's hottest original dubstep producers. So without further ado I present:

SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD as interviewed by Dr. EW

(I caught up with Speaker after a gig eating Lorenzo's pizza in my studio)

Dr. EW - For the people at home, what is your name and what do you do?

SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD - James Sauppe aka Speaker for the Dead and I'm a multi-instrumentalist and dubstep producer....and I'm a music educator, too.

EW - What got you started with playing music?

SPKR - I don't know, I was always into it, we always had a piano in my house growing up... I never had piano lessons but I would sit there and figure out songs, I figured out Mötley Crüe and Van Halen..whatever was on MTV, I think it was 1987 Beastie Boys - License to Ill, Poison, Bon Jovi, basically anything that was on MTV I would try to learn on my own just sit at the piano and..

EW - Then when did you take a serious turn with it?

SPKR - In school I started out playing the saxophone and then I eventually switched to drums, the rest is history. I haven't played the sax in years, it's so boring, all the music...for a kid, is boring. You can't play License to Ill on a saxophone. I think it's hard to get kids into music when it's not the music they listen to, ya know. But I'm a drummer. I always understood the piano, but in college I really started playing seriously and now I have like 30 piano students.

EW - So when did Speaker for the Dead and your interest in electronic music start?

SPKR - In 2004 I went to Europe, to London, to travel and going to all the clubs, hearing drum and bass.. the vibe there was so much cooler, everyone was there to have fun and dance and not be all judgmental. Coming from the jazz world where everything has to be so complex and everyone's real competitive, all that shit can really take the fun out of music. I was headed to music school and I was actually worrying about that, about it taking the fun out of music for me, ya know, with electronic music I found people just wanted to have fun and whatever. (takes giant bite of pizza) I was in music school at the University of the Arts and it was my junior year (2007), Starkey was one of my teachers there and he gave an assembly about how he was starting a new ensemble of all the instruments being MIDI controllers. I was really interested in that but I had never done electronic music before, but being a drummer I thought I could get into it. It was really exciting to me and I ended up being in the ensemble for 4 semesters in a row.

EW - So the ensemble was kinda the starting point for you as Speaker for the Dead?

SPKR - I was working with Reason and learning DAWs... they have real long winter breaks, like 6 weeks, over that one break all I did was write tunes in Reason, by the end of semester we were playing basically half of our set was songs I wrote. It was so cool. Paul's (Starkey) idea for the ensemble is that it would be all original music. It was the only group in the school to do that, so it was really cool.

EW - We actually met at the last show you played with the ensemble at Broketronica.

SPKR - Yeah that's the first time I met you and John Bean. That was my last show with them it was after we had our final school show and it was great. I was really hating playing jazz drums, they force you to play, I play for fun still but then I starting writing electronic songs as Speaker for the Dead. I feel really good about it. Electronic music is so young there's still so much going on. There's so many different sides with hip hop, dubstep, even pop and club. I studied jazz drumming at school but what I was really learning was composing and production. Really focusing more on that. You don't need any other musicians, you don't need to rehearse. I don't need to make 5 phone calls and match up schedules. I like the fact that I can write the track and the bass line and do the whole thing. That's what I really like....and there's no butting heads. I'll write a song in a half hour and then take 4 months to finish it out. The writing comes easy to me, but as a producer that's what I struggle with, making everything sound right. The fun part for me is writing so I just write and have this back catalog of songs so now I feel like I have a good number of tracks to start releasing.

EW - Which brings us to your newly released EP "Illusionaire". This is your first official release...

SPKR - Yes as Speaker for the Dead. It's my first release. These songs are the chosen ones out of the bunch I wrote after college and worked on. The songs basically come from where all music comes from, hard times, but I try to center it on melody. Even though it's beat driven music I still think there should be a central theme or melody, I keep shit real simple, I do some harmonic stuff, I use alot of chords, but I don't stray from the key...

EW- What does that mean?

SPKR - My stuff doesn't go out of key. There's key changes, but its a jazz thing. I keep it simple, simple chord changes. I keep it on the melody, I think that's important. I don't know... I just write music with what sounds good to me. I like to write string arrangements, the song "Nocturnal" is an original string arrangement. "Sunset on Mars" is just two Melotron cellos playing harmonies. I love classical music, anything with strings... I love string sections man.

EW - You also wrote some songs for other artists before this EP, right?

SPKR - Yeah for Kate Marie, I did 4 songs. Dev79 remixed one of them, which I just did a mashup of Gair's (Dev79) remix and my original, I can't wait to play it for you it sounds really cool. "Wake Up" was released Friday September 26th through all major digital music outlets. Eventually they'll all come out. She's a grime singer. A track I did for her that was on Fix Dotm's mixtape was rated by ukrapmusic.com as the most highly anticipated rap album in the UK in 2010.

EW- How long have you been playing live as Speaker for the Dead?

SPKR - Just under 2 years I think... 09 was the first time.

EW - Some of that was at the Philly Laptop Battle...

SPKR - Yeah I competed in 08, 09, 10 and this year. The first year I did it was the best overall.

(Took a smoke break and then ate Mentos and talked about What About Bob. James (SPKR) loved the Mentos. He proceeded to eat the Mentos the way Bill Murray apparently eats them in that movie.)

EW - One of the things I really love and what attracted me to your music was the live performance aspect, tell us about that?

SPKR - I try to keep it simple, but I have the controller set up like a DJ mixer so I have that to work with. One thing I do is I drop in live breaks over my tracks and put them through a Hi Pass Filter so you don't hear the kick and it's like a percussion instrument like a shaker. I like to play live synths alot too, I play piano and it's not something you always see people doing. I try to organize the set and make the transitions smooth and in key, triggering live vocals samples.. things like this, that's about it.

EW - The songs you play live, are not all on the EP...

SPKR - No, not even close, when I play live lately I haven't been playing songs from the EP, except "Illusionaire" and "Sunset on Mars" and "Fade Out".

EW - Alot of those unreleased tracks are really awesome, what's your plans with the songs that aren't on "Illusionaire"?

SPKR - Those are all future release, "Pretty Monster" I want to release in November, with remixes from Bombé, Hipgnosis and you (Dr. Ew) and maybe some others. I got 9 maybe 10 more tracks that are all finished and mastered, ready to go. I think of doing them in two 4-5 song EPs, instead of one huge LP. I don't think people have the attention span for it.

EW - What else does the future hold for Speaker for the Dead?

SPKR - Besides just writing songs? I want to start collaborating with other people, I'm working on a remix with a friend of mine who's a classical composer but also writes rock songs. I'm remixing one of his songs. I think its cool, it's something most dubstep guys wouldn't remix, it's more chill. It's different but I think it will go over well. I want to start collabing more, not just with other producers but with vocalists, start getting more involved in the scene. There's so many talented people out there. Coming from the whole live instrument scene I really want to start collabing with other local producers, not even 'cuz it would be cool but just to learn shit not just to get by you know, I'm always trying to learn shit. You know what I mean?

EW - For sure... Anything you'd like to wrap this up with, shouts outs or what have you...plugs?

I guess we're talkin about music so [a] DJ, producer/remixer, recorder, videographer, graphic designer, promoter, sometimes radio host, club/concert attendant. I grew up in a small town called Chestertown in Kent County, Maryland, aka KCMD! Moved up to Toronto for college as soon as I could, but still try to reach back and support anything kids are doing down there as much as I can.

Who is K-0TiC Couture?
He's also from Kent County, he's from Butlertown. C-Town and B-Town have actually had a long standing beef, which I always thought was unfair cuz one has 5000 people while the other has like 200. Anyway he's a young artist/rapper/local fashion icon who's definitely unlike anything KCMD's ever seen, and we'd like to think the rest of the planet too. He pretty much got me into club music, and I try to get him on just about every remix I do.

How'd you two start up?
We didn't know each other too much while coming up cuz he's 4 or 5 years younger than me so we were never in the same school. We met a couple times cuz there were some mutual friends that bridged that age gap; but really the beginning of us working together was when I was home during winter break 07/08 and got to DJ the New Year's party at this underage club in town called Jimmie's Deposit Box. It was wild. That's also the first time I heard/played Baltimore club music; seeing the kids rockin off and all that was just really cool. Anyway, we figured out we both do music and since there isn't a lot of that down there, started collaborating. Mostly online cuz I was still living in Toronto at that time.

How long were you in philly?
I was down there for pretty close to exactly a year (August 2010-2011). I was participating in this non-profit program, working full-time at Overbrook High School in West Philly.

Where are you now?
Now I'm back up in Toronto, the same block I lived on before which is actually really cool. It's called Dragon Alley; there's a community garden, a lot of kids, families, and artists.

What are your plans for up there?
Trying to find a job right now. There's a lot of great community organizations up here that I'd like to work with. Actually right now I'm volunteering for ManifesTO (http://themanifesto.ca) who just brought DJ Sega up as a part of the Red Bull Culture Clash.

When will we see you again and why?
Whenever I get enough money to come visit! Probably around some holidays, so I can see my friends and fam back in Maryland too.

If you could get philly into one artist from your new spot, whod it be? and vice versa
Hmmmm, Drake. Hahaaaa sike naw sike naw. Actually there's this rapper up here I just met during ManifesTO called Regular Rob who I thought was from Philly at first, and not just because of the beard! Also a singer I met this week named Shi Wisdom, she seems really cool. I mean there's a lot of talent up here in a lot of different scenes; when I first moved up here 5 years ago, the ska/punk scene was POPPIN.
> As for vice versa, I think it'd be cool if Toronto was down with Baltimore/Philly/Jersey club/party music in general, cuz then I'd be able to play it all the time. That's kinda what I was doing with this mixtape - trying to package those influences with some Toronto-ness by remixing a couple local artists, throwing in a few dancehall drum patterns (which is huge up here) and having the whole thing at that Philly speed of 140 bpm which can mix easily into dubstep (also huge up here).

Unfortunately Toronto also has a reputation for cold audiences (one of it's nicknames is Screwface Capital) but I'm sure that energy's in there somewhere. Also worth noting, and this isn't a bad thing for either city, but while Philly has a very distinct youth culture (party music, slang, umm flash mobs) Toronto has a lot more diasporic communities so there is a lot of diversity in terms of culture, music, food, etc which also makes for a really cool city life.

Trev is an all around Positive dude and always ahead of the game, and I'd like to strongly encourage all Actual Readers to check out his new mix, his old mixes (they're overslept on!) and pretty much anything he's up to b/c the kid lives and breathes this music and when you support the supporters everybody wins! Look, full disclosure, Cap'N Harry is my favorite, hands down favorite. Favorite producer, favorite drinking buddy, favorite DJ period. I first started out playing DIY block parties with guys who have now made their mark in the Philly and NYC dance scene. It was an incredible collective of young college kids who wanted nothing more then to drink in the street and dance. Sounds perfect right? desTROY (NYC), Tiger Tiger Panther (Philly), Gnarwhale (Philly), DJ BEEBS (NYC), Harry, and I spent countless hours consuming Sparks and getting noise complaints from a neighborhood that wasn't ready for blog house blasting through their windows at 3 in the afternoon. It is fitting now that we've grown from random DIY block parties to throwing monthly parties in NYC, Philly, & AC that have remained DIY to it's core. Because lets face it, if you don't care about your own party, how can you expect anyone else to care about it?

Harry didn't get the term Cap'N for nothing. The guy not only spent portions of his life burning out his eardrums in London's DNB scene and sipping suds in Germany, he spent some time as a real life sailor.

This should be screensaver is actually a pic from when Harry spent months aboard a sailboat working as a deckhand. While some spend their summers serving ice cream, or walking over priced show dogs (adopt a rescue), Harry earned his name sailing around the Caribbean. And while braving The Bermuda Triangle he made this little gem as a dare from Pink Taco's Gab Bonghi.

#2 Producer Extraordinaire

Harry has an incredible production background many are unaware of. Harry began producing years ago creating hybrid sounds like Bmore club meets Trance. One of his earliest tracks "Take Me B" slayed across Europe being pushed by heavy weights like Kissy Sell Out & Sinden. Not only was the tune a hit, it earned Harry the title of Kissy's "Unsigned Artist of The Month" before he was even 19.

Soon after meeting Harry at the first Block Party he began work as one half of the electro duo SXNDRGS with partner Logan Miller. The duo's tracks "We Can Fly" & "Chrome Depot" were played across European radio's and by the likes of The Bloody Beetroots & Kissy Sell Out. The two created a plethora of some of the hardest electro tunes i've ever heard.

Look if by now you still needed a reason besides his incredible music, his loyalty to Philly DIY, or his astute knowledge of everything BASS, you should know he is the best guy you could work with. Harry dedicates so much time and effort with everything he does. And most of all he is ready to lend unlimited help when needed. When a certain dubstep DJ (who shall remain nameless but not forgotten) bailed on a South Philly event, Harry helped The Actual Records Family by getting us in touch with the Trouble & Bass crew. The dropping of one DJ was a blessing in disguise because we had the Bass Heavy Weights The Captain and Star Eyes come and absolutely destroy South Philly. Harry's work with T&B and Actual Records created a hurricane of Bass that I wont soon forget. So know that when you get the chance to rock with Harry or anyone from the Actual Records family, your getting an experience made from hard work and the urge to provide the best party possible.

The man who brought you Creep Records, Creep Industries and now one of the horesmen behind Hostile City Industries, Arik has been behind or in front of almost every single punk recording to influence the West Chester/Philadelphia area in the last 20 years. Literally home-grown out of a basement studio in Downington aptly titled 'Your Mom's', Arik was busy releasing 7inches and distroing records thru the back of the MMR's of your local newstand while the rest of us degenerates were trying to graduate high school, scrape up money for Taco Bell and blasting Dead Milkmen records thru the mid-nineties. Now well into its 120th+ release and partners in both a budding Distro service and Local Glass Retailer, Creep has adapted with the ages, survived the move from W.C. to Phoenixville and settled in Philly, and continued to release influential, gritty and punk-as-fuck records from local favorites like: The Boils, The Bouncing Souls, Violent Society, Plow United, Flag Of Democracy, Man without Plan, Super Hi Five, Bearings, Live Not On Evil and so many more. Chances are if you know anyone in Philadelphia, they know someone who has recorded at the Creep House.

Expect the unexpected from Arik's set, however. His musical taste runs deep and his engineering ability and ear for odd soundscapes runs even deeper. A little birdie told me he's cooking up a level of original remixing & production that rivals Girl Talk, for his first-ever DJing debut! I wouldn't be surprised if it's better. Either way, this is a CANT-MISS outing and airing of tunes from the personal collection of the frontman of a multitude of genre-smashing rock and roll bands: Reject, Super Hi-Five, Greater Enemy...

Wow, it's been along time coming but now that i've gotten my sh*t together, I will be contributing regularly to the Actual Records Blog.

For those of you who don't know me please take some time to check out the various posts about me which include mixes, original tracks, and my various other antics as a member of the Actual Records Family this way we can skip the long introduction and get to what I'm here to provide you with, NEW SH*T. I went to the CONVERGE / DROP DEAD / TRAP THEM / COP PROBLEM show

on Saturday at the Broad Street Ministries and it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

Real Hardcore, Blistering Riffs, Old heads and young kids throwing down in the pit and NO fights, everything from tapes to LPs to tour-edition 7"s being sold in MASS quantities, super cheap and stunningly designed merch, Retardedly Talented Drummers, Totally reasonable secuirty people, Stage-dive friendly atmospheres, Tatted dudes hauling $3,000+ worth of lenses into a bloody, sweaty pit. Wrap it all up in Sean's stunning flyer and add my favorite band in philly (CP) to the bill and I'd rate this show as close to perfect as it gets [at least in the scene I came up in, where we'd take ONE of the above-mentioned things as a victory]

I could ramble on and on about how I've been going to Converge shows for 15 years now, the bands and places I've seen them with, the rumors circlulating that they're breaking up after this tour and never playing philly again. But since this post is about a fuckin hardcore show and not a forum on lambgoat, Im gonna shut the hell up and let the passion and musicianship in these tunes speak for itself. First up, Don't Step alum COP PROBLEM kicks the show off right and sets the tone for the rest of the evening with:

The instant Converge took the stage and I took a quick shot of the crowd piled in behind me (you smoke a cigarette before the headliner, I walk to the front of the stage. Priorities.), I questioned my decision to carry my small handicam into the very front of the pit, but then I saw a much smaller and heavier-inked dude holding like $3,000 worth of what looked to be brand new professional wedding photographer shit, crazy ass lenses and all, and I realized no matter what happened at least I had not made the poorest decision in my immediate vicinity. He eventually bailed and had the bouncer pull him over the barricade (weak dude, shoulda surfed!) and I was able to step into his foothold, brace myself against a monitor and literally sit on the stage to film the last couple videos. All in the name of avoiding a repeat of the concussions I suffer at :25-:42 and xxx to xxx in this first video, from the kick off of Converge's set, ENJOY:

Record Store Day 2011: Saturday 4/16

Hello world! Did you know you that Saturday 4/16 is National Record Store day?? I say we do it real big, drop loot + shoot for next year to be International Record Store Day- Turntable Lab, Im looking at you.

Well if you didnt know, now you know that Saturday is the official day for you to leave your houses and visit your local independent record store to buy some very fine limited-edition vinyl [special for the day] as well as comb the back catalogs of the physical releases you may have missed. For your handy reference, I have made another flyer depicting all of the places you can cop wax nearly every single day of the year in this fine city of ours, plus I'm giving you a quick individual breakdown on each of the stores so you can figure out which one is right for you.

I encourage you to visit the store nearest you, make friends, and make a habit out of it. That this city can still sustain 10+ independent music retailers is truly a testament to how rad our inhabitants are.

Be rad. Buy some records.

Tequila Sunrise is a great spot to cop some rare electronic imports, odd dance music, and impeccably maintained poly-bagged 12"s with verbose descriptions plastered in the corner of each sleeve. The sections are divided by genre, sub-genre, and label, which lends itself to you spending all fucking day looking through a ton of awesome shit you didn't know existed. The owner will play things for you and has a rad little dog.

A.K.A Music is by far the best-stocked CD store in the city, boasting a gigundo dirt-cheap used section and at one point they were def. the forerunners in the dance/bass vinyl retail game as well. Though they've scaled back the electronic + dance section of their 12" rack, they're still crazy on point with the new releases and last year they had the biggest inventory of Record Store Day Releases, even late in the day.

Creep Records is the best place in Philly to grab obscure and local punk-rarities on 7", 12" and limited pressing CDs. Both a label and a store [transplanted from West Chester, PA] Creep has released seminal recordings from area fav's Plow United, The Boils, Violent Society and The Bouncing souls, and stocks an arsenal of glassware, odd shit and record players in addition to their rotating stock of local releases.

Really the ONLY Record store in 'Center City', Long In The Tooth is a record-collector's dream, stocking their shelves with one of the biggest 7 inch collections in the city [rivaled only by BWS] and more 12"s than you could paw through in a day, trust me I've tried. A wall of fame that'll make you salivate and hidden gems in every stack, this is one of the most fair-priced and well-rounded record shops in the city. A must visit.

Repo Records has been selling me vinyl longer than any other store in the city. Though the layout has changed slightly, the ethics remain the same: new shit, knowledgeable staff, fair prices, great location. Repo is literally the only reason to be on South street. There is guaranteed to be a treasure on the wall and some hot shit in the back. Sometimes we all just stand around like zombies and glare at the new releases. It's fun!!

If you're looking for the largest collection of stickers on a door in Philly, then look no further than Noise Pollution on 4th just off South st. Outlasting their fellow fourth street brethren Corrupted Image, Relapse and 611, that Noise Pollution is still standing is a testament to where the demand lies in Philly: for cheap punk records made by your friend's friends & sold back by their friends to me, you & our friends.

The southern-most store in our city, B.W.S. is a great shop with a large variety of used vinyl + a sweet little listening station in the front window. Sometimes I feel like someone living a parallel life to my own has just sold back his entire record collection in there moments before I arrived, because I leave with so many great, rare records from local bands that I must have seen the mystery shelf-stocker a million times in the 90s.

The Philadelphia Record Exchange lives up to its name: a ton of old records, used records, mono, stereo, cheap, rare, you name it. Definitely the place to grab a stack for super cheap and spend a lazy afternoon getting to know all the classics you wish your dad had in his collection. Hang out with the old heads long enough and maybe you'll learn something, better yet just spend some time digging & listening. It'll pay off.

The Digital Ferret is not as cute and cuddly as it may appear by that name. Stocked to the brim[stone] with dark-wave, industrial and a hefty death/black/doom metal section, The digi Fer [as I like to call it] is by far our city's most evil record store and it rules. Located in an unassuming 4th street shop-front right around fabric row, the Ferret sells the music that keeps the dungeons and tattoo shops of south philly rocking.

The Marvelous is the musician's record store, stocking not just records and CDs but instruments, musical accessories & more. Plus they have people on staff who will teach you things, fix your instrument/ turntable and talk to you about what's playing or what's doing. Located in the basement of the hustling bustling 40th & walnut intersection, The Marvelous is a good place to go to hear & buy something clever.

Don't forget, these reviews are just my opinion from 11 years worth and tens of thousands of dollars worth of record shopping in Philly. I urge you to check out these shops for yourself and treat yourself to something nice. For your handy reference, here's last year's map with this year's date, enjoy!!!

Suga Shay x Jack Beats x Conscious Pilot x Jakes!

I had the opportunity to film the latest offering of Dub Nation thanks to Seraph and Steez Promo and I whipped us this little video of the highlights to show you all what you might have missed...

I have to say, it was one hell of a lineup for a Sunday. The opening sets from Suga Shay and Jay Shok were right on point sonically, with Shay dropping local bombs like BHB's RCMP and Qi Command's Justin-Beiber dubstep blend early on, and Shok setting the stage perfectly for the grimey onslaught of bass cannons that followed...

I def. wasn't prepared for the heaviness that Conscious Pilot let forth the instant he took over the decks, so I let my camera do the listening so I could sift through the grimey pieces later. As you can see, the crowd responded and I got that special feeling of hearing something that might've received it's final tweak just moment before it's debut on a finely-tuned soundsystem... epic.

The real surprise of the night came in the form of Jakes, who up-faded like a pro though a hefty CD-r collection and def. provided the technical high-point of the evening in terms of track-mixing and DJM-800 usage. I personally enjoyed him hyping the crowd to the point of insanity while blendig two discs, the turning around and casually flipping through a 100 CD booklet with hand-written titles with ease, hunting around for the next perfect jam. Dude is a fucking pro and I would most-def. pay to see that show again.

Jack Beats provided a dynamic show to say the least. On the one hand they did play more than a few tracks that've seen spins in my sets over the last couple years in their alternate format (wax), and it was def. fun to see two DJM-800's linked from the same audio source [roll-filters], but I guess either I just had too high expectations or the other four DJs on the bills just fucking KILLED it, but I just didnt feel they played as hard as I wanted them to. If you were there, let me know what you thought in the comments. Either way it was a fucking hell of a show. Somebody just needs to remind out of towners that Philly is a progressive fucking city and the kids are ready to hear that new and weird shit. Or maybe they just need to get to the show earlier and hear it for themselves, cause Suga Shay, Jay Shok, Conscious Pilot and Jakes fucking murdered their sets. Dont take my word for it, watch that video!!

The new Elected record drops 5/17 on Vagrant

For those of you unfamiliar with the [side] project of Rilo Kiley's Blake Sennett, this third LP will find Blake playing most of the instruments himself and handling production duties. The results have been described as littered with gems reminiscent of 70's-era Bowie bounce and "Stones cum early Talking Heads" grooves, as well as the traditional 'island sunset serenade[s]...with the melodic slide of the lap steel, the comforting pluck of a ukulele, offering new ears a sense of what’s come before.'

Said Sennett of the stripped down approach to constructing the new record: "“I just thought, may as well take it as far as I can alone…then I brought in my friends to fill in the blanks.” These friends come in the form of longtime Elected Guitarist Mike Bloom, Bright Eyes' Mike Mogus and hero of the day and mixer of 'Sun, Sun, Sun' (the previous, amazing Elected record) Jason Cupp, who convinced Sennett to return to music composition via an impromptu recording session after the singer/songwriter had already abandoned the craft in lieu of working on film production. Hey Jason, I own you as many beers as you can drink.

I'll get that chance on Tuesday May 24th when the Elected return after their ~~6 million year~~ 3 year hiatus to play the Mercury Lounge in NYC... for a mere $12. You'd be a fool not to attend, I have 2 open seats in my car.

Our west coast homey NIT GRIT, also known as Danny Beall, has been banging out some crazy progressive dubstep and future bass out in San Jose, CA and tomorrow we're finally gonna get a proper taste of his heavy machinery. Spiraling glitchy melodies intertwined with speaker-throbbing bass riffs and wobbles, this shit sounds like it came straight out of the future as a soundtrack to some epic giant-robot vs. man apocalyptic battle, and subsequent triumph and celebration. Which side wins though, I can't tell, cuz this dude has his machines churning out some pretty heavy wobbles and I can definitely imagine an AT-AT crushing human skulls to the beat...

FML: Philly invades AC

Last Thursday myself, Suga Shay and DJ Sega were invited down to the boneyard to rock Jason Forslund and Dan Fithian's FUCK MY LIVER Party and we were joined by a whole crew of Philly DJ's: Christopher Bush, Qi Command, BHB and Phsh to name a few. The party was out of control, the openers (DJ Stryfe and Desafinado) were fucking killer and the locals were more than accomodating... Don't take my word for it, peep the session:

It was an adventure, that's for sure. Chock full of lazer beams, well fed dune cats, butterfly knife demonstrations, weirdo boardwalk dudes from the 70s, dancing ladder workers, sweet ass blue and pink jackets and an all out good time.

We all had a blast and literally could not wait to get back there. Those FML kids know how to throw a fuckin' party! Their recent foray into the Philadelphia promotions world, DTF, has been recounted to me as 'legendary,' and week after week Dan and Jay have been bringing absolutely SICK lineups to their shows. Be on the lookout for new parties, venues and events from these two.. and make sure you follow them on twitter (Dan here) as well as FMLiverAC and their blog. We'll be making many a Thursday trip back down to rock the boneyard til 4 am strong... Whether you're in Philly or NJ, don't sleep on this party. They're killing it down there and you def. don't wanna miss out on seeing FML pop off!

Phsh built his Superdope party from the ground up, outgrowing many a center city location before landing the rager off south street at Fluid, and aside from regularly packing that spot deeper than Ive ever seen he continues to bring huge crowds and big lineups wherever he spins (which is actually kind of hard to keep track of.) One night he's in West, the next South, the next NYC opening for someone I have to google at a giant venue. The kid's hustling, and he's one of the rare people deserving of the hype.

A recent conversation revealed that he's been DJing since 14, and spent at least the first 4 years whipping vinyl only. That skill-building payed off last week in AC when Phsh, armed with only a small stack of Mad Decent releases, threw down an impromptu unbilled guest set at the Boneyard around 4am, to the marvel of onlookers and Chris Bush (who brought the 12"s). I'm psyched to hear the darker side of this deep crate digger at Phonographic, and I know that he's willing to accept the challenge from first-lady of Philly Dubstep Suga Shay. Expect to hear all the heaters in this battle for relationship-wobbling supremacy!!
